SQ Philip's Steaks
About This Spot
Stepping into SQ Philip's Steaks feels like discovering a well-kept secret nestled in the heart of South Philly’s vibrant Passyunk Avenue. The atmosphere hums with an easygoing energy, a blend of the city’s proud food culture and the casual rhythms of neighborhood life. It’s the kind of place where the clink of a cold soda bottle and the sizzle from behind the counter compose a simple soundtrack that invites you to slow down just enough and savor these moments.
This isn’t a spot for complicated dining or rushed transactions. Instead, it’s built around honest, no-frills enjoyment — the kind that comes from a perfectly toasted roll cradling tender slices of steak, mingled with just the right balance of melted cheese and those signature peppery bites. The vibe carries a distinct South Philly authenticity, a combination of welcoming warmth and efficient pace that keeps the line moving but never feels hurried or impersonal.
Here, you’ll find that familiar comfort of local favorites reinvented subtly — from cheese fries that are indulgent without overreach to inventive twists like the inside-out pizza that speak to inventive playfulness without losing sight of tradition. Staff interactions have a refreshingly straightforward charm; it’s clear that this is a team that knows their craft and respects the steady flow of regulars alongside curious first-timers.
Whether you’re coming off a game at the nearby Sports Complex or wandering Passyunk for the day, SQ Philip’s Steaks offers a little pocket of grounded Philly spirit. It’s equal parts a stop to satisfy a hunger and a brief pause to experience something genuine — a place where familiarity meets the joyful discovery of a truly heartfelt local bite.

This is a highly undervalued and under appreciated Philly landmark. I had a cheesesteak fried onions with American and it was awesome!!! Those other two famous places are tourists traps and suburban crowd. Philips is conveniently located minutes from the Sports Complex on Passyunk and is easy in easy out. Great value as well. Loved Philips. Highly recommend if you are visiting for a sports or concert event.

Philips steak in South Philly is the real deal. Forget Pats and Geno. This is best cheesesteak in Philadelphia. The rolls are so soft and tender. The steak is slice perfectly and they have the famous hot peppers. Late night craving fixed. Definitely glad we made this stop even though we don’t live in the area. This is the hidden gem in Philly around Passyunk Ave.

Last night we stopped at the food truck, outside of citizens bank park. The guys were super cool and friendly. We got two cheesesteaks with fried onions. OMGGGG they were so good. We ate half before we headed home, and the other half just now. definitely wanna check out their spot down the city and see what else they got. I just saw a picture of their cutlet sammich, on their IG, that looks stupidddddd good. I also LOVE that they have their Mama on the side of the truck. We Italians are BIGGG on family.

"Can I place a takeout order?" "No baby we don't do that just come here and order and we'll have it ready for you right away." She was right, and it was a good cheesesteak too: cooper sharp, seeded, with some hot peppers. PS if you want it chopped instead of sliced just ask. maybe the only place in the Philly area I know that does this.
